WHY SEE A COUNSELLING PSYCHOLOGIST?
All of us face difficulties at different stages of our lives, and at times we find it impossible or overwhelming to cope and manage these difficulties. It is important to realise that the difficulties we endure are experienced differently by each of us, for example starting at a new school or new job may cause minimum stress for one person, but may be highly stressful for someone else. Thus, seeking guidance from a Counselling Psychologist can be important in helping you develop or improve your coping strategies in ways that are unique to you and the difficulty you are enduring.
WHAT CAN A COUNSELLING PSYCHOLOGIST DO FOR YOU?
We can apply psychological interventions to clients with psychopathology, developmental challenges, and adjustment problems by
• assessing cognitive, personality, socio-emotional and neuropsychological functions in relation to life challenges and developmental problems, and by
• diagnosing and identifying psychopathology and their impact on developmental processes and adjustment.
GENERAL GOALS TO BE REACHED IN THERAPY:
Improving Coping Strategies
Maintaining a Positive Attitude
Providing Inner Strength and Hope
WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT WHEN ATTENDING YOUR THERAPY SESSION/S?
Attending a session with a psychologist provides you with the opportunity to converse about any feelings, behaviours, thoughts, or difficulties you are experiencing that you are unable to share with anyone else and that may be impacting your day-to-day life in a negative way. Confidentiality is maintained when sharing information with your psychologist, and effort is made to create a safe space for you to be comfortable and honest in. The psychologist will assist you in making sense of your feelings, behaviours, thoughts, or difficulties by working collaboratively with you.
HOW MANY SESSIONS WILL YOU NEED TO ATTEND?
The frequency of sessions depends on the difficulty you are enduring and the impact it is having on you. Thus, at times only one or a few sessions are necessary, and at times more sessions are required. After each session, you and your psychologist will collaboratively make an informed decision on your continuity with therapy and book another session if necessary. Each session is between 51-60 minutes in length.
WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT WHEN UNDERGOING YOUR PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSESSMENT/S?
When choosing to undergo a psychological assessment (whether it is needed for evaluation of emotions, intelligence, aptitude, personality, career-related guidance, etc), an initial interview will be conducted. This is done to determine your expectations and reasoning for undergoing any assessment/s, which will ensure an informed decision is made by you before assessment takes place.
Once the initial interview is completed, you will complete your assessment/s. The psychologist will then score your results, and book a feedback session to discuss them with you. A final report will then be given to you with your results and recommendations.
The time taken to complete an assessment/s varies depending on the type of assessment/s you choose to undergo.
Confidentiality is maintained with any assessment/s conducted.
